Manufacturing Considerations
Drawer-to-housing fit tolerance is the difference between a satisfying drawer glide and a drawer that binds, sticks, or wobbles. A drawer that's too tight binds every time humidity rises and the wood swells — the drawer becomes unusable. A drawer that's too loose wobbles side-to-side during opening and closing — the product feels cheap. The target clearance is 1.5–2mm per side between the drawer side wall and the housing — tight enough to track straight, loose enough to accommodate seasonal expansion. We achieve this by cutting the drawer sides and housing interior in the same CNC setup, referencing both from a common zero point. After assembly, every drawer is test-fit: it must slide through its full range of motion with less than 2 kg of push/pull force, and side-to-side play must be under 3mm total when the drawer is half-extended. Drawers that bind or wobble are rejected and re-machined.
Stacking alignment groove precision determines whether a multi-drawer tower stays straight or leans over time. Each unit has a recessed groove in its top surface and a matching raised lip on its bottom surface. When the lip of the upper unit seats into the groove of the lower unit, the two units are aligned and prevented from sliding relative to each other. If the lip-to-groove clearance is too loose, the upper unit can shift and the tower develops a lean. If the clearance is too tight, the units are hard to separate when reconfiguring. The target lip-to-groove clearance is 0.3–0.5mm — snug enough to prevent visible lean, loose enough for hand separation. The groove and lip are cut in a single CNC pass — the groove is the same width as the lip plus 0.5mm tool compensation offset. Stacked-unit lean is checked at QC: a 5-unit stack loaded with 2 kg per drawer must show less than 2mm of forward lean from vertical.
Pine drawer bottoms can sag under long-term load if the bottom panel is too thin or improperly supported. A 3mm-thick pine bottom panel spanning 30×20 cm without support will sag 3–5mm under 3 kg of load over six months — this is visible and makes the drawer look warped. We use a two-part solution: the drawer bottom is set into a routed groove in all four drawer sides (not nailed or stapled from below), which provides edge support around the full perimeter. Second, for drawer depths over 20 cm, we add a center support rail below the bottom panel — a 15×15mm pine strip running the full depth of the drawer, dado-joined to the front and back panels, that supports the bottom panel at its mid-point. This eliminates visible sag up to a 6 kg drawer load.
