Wooden Compartment Box with Clear Acrylic Lid for Gift Packaging

Square paulownia wood box with 9 fixed compartments and hinged clear acrylic lid, suitable for retail-ready tea packaging, gift box display, and small-item organization.

Key Features

  • 9-compartment fixed grid — 3×3 layout provides more compartments than the typical 6 or 8 grid boxes; each cell sized for standard tea bags, jewelry, or small craft supplies, with fixed dividers that contribute to structural rigidity
  • Hinged clear acrylic lid — opens on metal hinges for full access to all nine compartments; the transparent lid lets customers and retail staff check contents at a glance without opening
  • Pre-painted paulownia exterior — available in brown, white, and black; provides consistent retail-ready appearance; brown for tea packaging, white for wedding and gift, black for jewelry presentation
  • Paulownia wood construction — 30% lighter than equivalent pine, reducing shipping costs and retail shelf loading; the painted surface masks grain for a uniform branded look
  • Square 23×23 cm footprint — symmetric shape works equally well facing any direction on a retail shelf; nests efficiently in shipping cartons

Applications

Tea brand retail packaging

Where tea companies package 9 varieties in a single gift box — each compartment holds 8–12 tea bags of one variety, the clear lid shows the full collection, and the pre-printed 'TEA' identifies the product category at a glance on retail shelves.

Wedding favor and gift packaging

Where the white-painted version is used for wedding welcome gifts, bridal party favors, or guest welcome boxes — the 9 compartments organize small gifts, candies, or keepsakes, and the white finish coordinates with wedding decor.

Jewelry and accessory retail display

Where the black-painted version merchandises earrings, rings, or cufflinks by style or color — each compartment holds one SKU, the clear lid protects against dust while keeping every piece visible.

Customization Options

Compartment layout: Standard is a 3×3 grid (9 equal compartments). Alternative layouts: 2×3 (6 compartments), 4×4 (16 for smaller items), or mixed grids (4 large + 5 small). Fixed dividers are standard — glued in for maximum rigidity. Removable dividers available for reconfigurable layouts.

Exterior color: Brown, white, and black are standard. Custom Pantone-matched paint colors available. Two-tone (e.g., white exterior, colored interior dividers) and distressed finishes supported. The painted paulownia surface takes color evenly with a smooth matte or satin finish.

Lid printing: Pre-printed 'TEA' text is a stock option for tea packaging. Custom text, patterns, or branding on the acrylic lid or box exterior. Acrylic options: clear (standard), frosted (softens view), tinted (brand color overlay).

Dimensions: Standard is 23×23×9 cm. Scale up for larger collections (30×30 cm) or down for compact boxes (18×18 cm). Compartment depth adjusts with box height — standard depth accommodates tea bags up to 8 cm tall.

Branding: Silk screen printing on the acrylic lid — most common for tea brands. Laser engraving on the painted exterior — removes paint to reveal lighter paulownia beneath, creating a natural-wood logo on a colored background. Hot stamping on lid or exterior.

Why This Design Works

Nine compartments in a 3×3 grid is a deliberately different format from our 6 and 8 compartment boxes. Six compartments covers the basics (English Breakfast, Earl Grey, Green, Chamomile, Peppermint, Rooibos). Eight covers a premium selection. Nine covers a premium selection plus one — the extra compartment holds a seasonal variety, a honey stick, a tea infuser, or a sampler that drives engagement. The 3×3 grid reads as visually balanced and complete. For non-tea applications, nine compartments segment small items into more categories than a 6-grid can. The trade-off: each cell is smaller than in a 6-grid at the same box size. For oversized tea bags or bulky items, the 6-grid version is the better fit.

Pre-painted paulownia serves a different buyer than natural unfinished wood. The unfinished pine and bamboo boxes in our range are for buyers who apply their own finish — craft retailers, DIY brands, custom stain matching. This box is for buyers who want a finished product on the shelf immediately — tea brands ordering 3,000 white boxes, wedding suppliers needing consistent color across multiple orders, jewelry brands wanting black presentation boxes. The painted surface hides paulownia's featureless grain (an advantage — uniform color with no grain competing for attention) and provides consistent brand color across batches.

The hinged clear acrylic lid creates a dual retail-display + gift-packaging function. A sliding lid or solid lid hides the compartments — the box reads as a closed container. The clear hinged lid shows all nine compartments, inviting the customer to open and explore. In retail, an opened box becomes a self-service display — the customer handles each tea bag, compares varieties, builds their own selection. The hinged lid stays open without being held. A lift-off lid box or sliding lid box serves one function or the other; the hinged clear lid serves both.

Manufacturing Considerations

The painted finish on paulownia requires a primer coat to prevent grain raise. Paulownia is porous with a slightly fuzzy surface after sanding. Direct paint application causes wood fibers to swell (grain raise), producing a rough surface. We apply a sanding sealer primer first that penetrates and locks the surface fibers, then sand smooth. The color coat follows in 2–3 thin layers. Each painted panel is inspected under side-light for color consistency, coverage, and surface smoothness.

The 9-compartment divider assembly is a cumulative tolerance challenge. With 4 divider strips crossing at 4 intersection points, each intersection must be notched to half-depth for clean interlocking. If one notch is off by 0.5mm, the grid is visibly skewed. We cut all divider notches in a single CNC operation referencing a common datum, and strips are cut from the same batch for consistent thickness. The assembled grid is checked on a flat surface — all compartments must be square within 0.5mm, and all divider tops must be level for the acrylic lid to close flush.

The printed acrylic lid must align with the compartment grid when closed. Text or branding on the lid must be centered relative to the compartment layout — a logo off-center by 3mm is noticeable on a 23 cm box. We print lid graphics using a registration template referenced to the hinge positions — since hinges determine the lid's relationship to the box body, printing relative to hinge holes ensures alignment. Each assembled box is checked: lid closed, graphic must be centered within 2mm of the box centerline.

Hilon Wood Recommendation

Start with the brown painted version in the standard 23×23×9 cm size with 9 compartments. Brown is the highest-volume color for tea packaging — it reads as warm and natural despite being painted, and hides minor wear better than white or black. Order with the stock 'TEA' lid print if serving tea brands, or with a clear unprinted lid for maximum buyer flexibility. If your market splits between tea and non-tea, order 70% brown/tea and 30% white/blank — the white version crosses over to wedding, gift, and jewelry markets without tea-specific printing. Add custom branded lid printing on reorder after validating which buyer segment drives your volume.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are the compartments removable or adjustable?
Standard dividers are fixed (glued in place) — they contribute to structural rigidity and won't shift during shipping. Removable dividers that slot into grooves are available as a custom option — the box is slightly less rigid but the end user can reconfigure the layout. For tea packaging where the layout rarely changes, fixed dividers are recommended.
Can the painted finish be matched to my brand color?
Yes. We can match any Pantone, RAL, or physical color sample. Color matching requires a pre-production sample for your approval. Custom colors typically have a higher MOQ than the three standard colors because the paint batch is mixed specifically for your order.
Does the acrylic lid scratch during retail handling?
Acrylic is more scratch-resistant than polystyrene but less than glass. Under normal retail handling, the lid maintains clarity. We apply peel-off protective film to both sides of every lid — it stays on through packing and shipping, and the retailer peels it off when the box goes on display for a pristine first impression.
How does this differ from the 8-compartment tea bag organizer?
This box has 9 fixed compartments in a 3×3 grid with pre-painted exterior colors — designed as retail-ready packaging. The 8-compartment tea bag organizer is natural bamboo with a bottom drawer, designed for cafe counter display and daily service. This box is gift packaging; the organizer is equipment for a beverage station.
Can the box hold items taller than standard tea bags?
The standard 9 cm height provides approximately 7.5 cm of internal depth below the acrylic lid. For taller items (coffee pods, spice jars, vials), we can increase the box height to 12–15 cm. The acrylic lid and hinges remain the same — only the side panel height changes. Specify your tallest item during inquiry.
